Another Finnish Leader Defends Marin, and Men Get Furious
“We’re certainly not afraid of women!”
In case you missed it, Finnish PM Sanna Marin has been in the news worldwide — and the subject of many hot takes on Medium — in the last couple of weeks because she danced on a video with friends in somebody’s apartment.
This is by far not Marin’s first scandal. There’s always something she’s doing wrong. Whether she’s holding a glass of wine, going out or wearing leggings, Finnish media and our homegrown Joe Rogan wannabes are after her.
But she’s also receiving support, from people in Finland and around the world. Including our very first female head of state.
Lipstick Government
She, and other cabinet members, have been harassed since they took office in late 2019. In early 2021, the NATO Strategic Communications Centre of Excellence published a report about the online abuse of Finland’s female-led government, but it has been surprising to absolutely no one.
Marin herself tweeted about the report when it came out, using some of the words they’ve been called: grocery store cashier, inexperienced, lipstick government, pantyhose government, girl.
