There are always a couple of trends going on in Medium. One person writes a viral article about Medium, people start responding, and soon there’s an avalanche of people getting in on the hype and giving their two cents on the topic.

Should you share your earnings or not? How many claps is the right amount of claps? Is the algorithm broken or is it just fine? Is Medium *gasp* dead? That last one seems to come back all the time.

The big highlighting debate of 2022 is by far one of the weirdest of these debates, and to be quite honest, the dumbest. One person hated people highlighting too much of their stories, and the responses started rolling in.

There were people agreeing, people not agreeing, and people making fun of the whole thing. As they should, because it was stupid.

I really didn’t want to comment on this and give it more air, but I’m going to, because there were consequences to this, the dumbest Medium debate of all time. Because many readers highlight less now than they did a couple of months ago.

They’re afraid to highlight stories because people now think writers don’t like it when others highlight their stories. I even consider it twice now, before highlighting. Will this writer hate that I…
