Can We Please Get Rid of the Poverty Filter for Latin America?

You don’t need to amplify misery to make yourself feel better, thank you.

A couple of weeks ago I watched a documentary, made for Finnish TV, about Argentina’s “crazy days”.

As in, the Milei presidency and the economic crisis we’ve been living for several years now.

I watched it even though I know enough about the subject as it is: I’ve lived in Buenos Aires for 15 years and was fired from my job after eight years by the Milei government.

What made me watch this documentary were a couple of comments I got from people in Finland. They were surprised by my decision to still keep living here despite it being difficult right now.

So I got through the hour-long show, which included interviews with journalists, politicians and even a comedian I know (yay!) mixed with footage from the streets.

It was interesting, for sure, and included things I didn’t know about Milei. But when I got to the end, I was annoyed as hell.

The whole thing had a blue-gray filter that made it look miserable. The footage from the streets was dark, shot at night, and only showed poverty.
