Criminals: They’re Dumber Than We Think

January 6th, Elizabeth Holmes, Ted Bundy… Even well-known felons aren’t usually criminal masterminds.

One of the most interesting things I’ve seen come out of the January 6th, 2021 insurrection are the videos in which Trump supporters brazenly entered the Capitol and incriminated themselves.

These people streamed live video of themselves committing federal crimes. Trying to overthrow the government (and getting dangerously close to it), stealing documents, vandalizing the office of the Speaker of the House.

In the next couple of weeks, the rest of us watched in awe, wondering how these people committed crimes, seemingly without realizing there would be consequences for their actions. Videos of the QAnon Shaman and his conspiracist buddies traveled around the world, and we all marveled at how incredibly stupid these people were.

Some of the young men at the Capitol went as far as bragging about their actions on dating apps, making it easy for young liberal women to find and report them.

Still, it took a while for these people to be brought to justice. But little by little, many of them found the police on their doorstep and had to face at least some consequences for their actions. And in large part, it’s…
