It’s a Good Time for Medium Newbies Again

It’s far easier to get views with a low follower count now than a couple of months ago.

I might be getting ahead of myself here, but right now I’m loving the recent changes to the Medium algorithm.

Many of the established writers who have been here for a long time have seen their Medium earnings take a dip recently. But I’ve also been seeing new people appear, put in the work and start making money.

For myself, it’s been an interesting process. I came back here because of the Medium Writers Challenge in August. I had only written a couple of stories before then, intermittently, since March of 2019. Some of them got curated and gathered some views, some of them didn’t. But all in all, I felt seen. It seemed like someone really was there, reading these stories and deciding whether to distribute them or not. Some writers talked about the infamous curation jail, but I didn’t see it.

I decided to come back here in April 2021, determined to stick to it. It didn’t take long for me to realize it wasn’t the right time.

When I’d written about 5 stories with 0 to 1 views, I decided it was better to save my time for paid work.
