Maybe Not Everything Is Feminism’s Fault
Maybe this is why we need feminism.
Feminism has gone too far lately. It’s become too radical, and now we have to go back to the way things used to be.
That’s the opinion of a lot of people in Argentina, where I live. A catholic, conservative country, compared to most of Europe and parts of the United States.
But it’s also the non-spoken opinion of a lot of progressive-leaning people in Europe who have been inundated with misogynist rhetoric in the media and online.
They hear the lines about the dangers of cancel culture and feminism that originate in the US media and political discourse and are quickly spread everywhere in the world via social media.
As a result, many people who identify as leftists and no longer associate with the movement, even if they don’t openly say they’re anti-feminist.
In our new worldwide communication ecosystem, feminism has somehow become a bad word. Feminists are getting the blame for our rights being taken away from us. Many women I know who used to be okay calling themselves feminists now don’t want to anything to do with the word or the movement.
But maybe some of the things that have been going on really aren’t the fault of the people trying to fix them.
