A couple of disclaimers to start with.

First of all, if you’re on Medium to make a quick buck: good luck. Also: this story is probably not for you.

Second, I’m not here to tell anybody that they’re doing something wrong if they’re here to make money writing listicles, productivity articles or stories about how they made it as a freelancer. I don’t think anyone is a lesser professional for wanting to make money, and everybody who writes has the right to call themselves a writer.

But if you’re new to Medium and you’re here because you want to explore something deeper, here’s some advice.

Don’t read stories on how to make it on Medium.

The problem with success stories

Pick a niche, don’t pick a niche.

If you do pick a niche, make sure it’s profitable and interesting to a lot of people. No, you better work on something nobody else is writing about.

Write every day, write twice a week, write only once a week. Focus on 500-word posts, write long-form.
