Russians Are Using European-ish License Plates to Avoid Sabotage

Hate to say it, but I don’t feel bad for Russians.

A couple of days ago, the Finnish public broadcasting company YLE reported on a piece of news that probably should have made me feel bad for Russians, but did the exact opposite.

Russian tourists are facing discrimination and even sabotage when they travel in Europe with their Russian cars.

So, as always happens in countries like Russia (and Argentina) where people have to get creative to make ends meet, someone with an entrepreneurial mindset was there to take advantage of the situation.

There are now companies that sell European-looking license plates for Russian cars. They contain the numbers and letters of Russian plates, but leave out the small Russian flag that draws attention — and anti-Russian sentiment from Finnish people.

The fake-ish license plates are illegal in Russia, so tourists have to switch them before crossing the border. But for traveling in Europe unnoticed, they’re great.
