The Harmful Myth of the European Latino
How one nation’s superiority myth breeds discrimination.
Earlier this year, in a public event with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, Argentinian President Alberto Fernández quoted a song by Argentinian singer Litto Nebbia and ended up getting attention for all the wrong reasons.
His words translate roughly as follows.
“Mexicans came from indians, Brasilians from the jungle, but us Argentinians arrived on boats, boats from Europe, and that’s how be built our society.”
A presidential quote of Trump-worthy ignorance.
I’ll bet Sánchez was happy about wearing a mask on his face so you couldn’t see his expression.
Fernández not only completely forgot about the many indigenous peoples living in the Argentinian territory but managed to offend his Latin American neighbors, as well, many of whom repudiated his words.
And yes, he forgot about slavery, too. Not only extremely offensive to the descendants of slaves living in Argentina…
