What Bothers Me About the US as a European
If you’re still on the fence about voting, please hear me out.
I didn’t mean to write anything about the election. I don’t think anything I say, especially at this point in time, will sway anyone’s perception of the candidates.
There’s plenty you can find online about both of them.
But just in case you’re still on the fence about whether to vote or not, I have something to say.
From a European living in Latin America, there’s nothing that makes me angrier than people in the US not understanding how important they are.
I’ve been obsessed with US politics since the 2000 election. I was fifteen years old, on the other side of the Atlantic, and nervously following the tedious process unfold in Florida.
It was the first time I ever heard about the electoral college, a terribly outdated system.
I learned then that the winner of the election might not be the winner of the popular vote, and that the person in charge of the most powerful country in the world might not even enjoy the support of half the voters. I would see this unfairness repeat itself with Trump in 2016, and come very close to taking over in 2020.
