What the Fresh Hell Is Happening Here, and Are Publications Back?
I hate a popularity contest.
So, this blessed platform now has a new CEO, and many writers are already noticing it. The changes were mostly met with a positive attitude at first — including on my part — until many of us began seeing their impact on our work.
I have been in the MPP since 2019, but didn’t really take Medium seriously until a year ago. Until then, Medium seemed like a small club of friends that was impossible to crack your way into.
Maybe it wasn’t, but that’s how it seemed whenever I published. Crickets. Big writers were the only ones that mattered.
But last year, right around the time that many established writers began complaining about an algorithm change that made their earnings disappear, many of us unknown writers began gaining traction.
For the first time, it looked like if you worked hard to publish often, your earnings were slowly going to trend upward. And that happened, to me. Starting with the money to buy a couple of black coffees a month to suddenly covering my rent with Medium money.
It was actually pretty reliable. Put in the work, get the reward. After nearly 300 stories published here, I was not only happy to be able to write whatever I wanted, but also…
