Why Women Aren’t Funny
Not to be sexist, but…
So, this week I had an interesting conversation with a certain type of male comic.
You know the type. Middle-aged, still thinks Chappelle is king, doesn’t hang out with female comics much.
He’s funny as hell, but you know… Beware of having a conversation with him before your set if you’re a woman.
I made that mistake.
I’m Not Sexist, But…
We were talking about what kind of material I was going to do that night, and about comedy in general.
“It’s great to see that there are more women in stand-up right now,” I said.
“Sure, but you know… and I don’t mean to sound like a machista here, but…”
Yeah, this is always the point where you should remove yourself from the conversation. Whenever the “I’m not a racist/sexist/homophobe, but…” comes along, it’s pretty clear you are, in fact, dealing with a bigot.
He continued.
“I don’t see a lot of funny female comics. Like, really funny.”
Seriously, though, we would save so much time if you guys just did five minutes of self-analyzing and accepted that you’re sexist. That way we could actually start working to undo all that shit, instead of…
