Women Are Not a Niche
We’re half the population, but our stories aren’t the standard.
I do standup. Started recently and am still in the open mic phase, but I’m feeling good about it. And doing great with it. Getting a lot of laughs, consistently.
I do a lot of sex jokes, and I have a short set about women’s hygiene products. The diva cup, tampons, the problems that go with both. As the icing on the cake, I finish that set with some problems with G-strings.
The great thing about that set is that while it’s women-specific, it makes everyone laugh. Men have no idea how to insert a tampon or diva cup, but the jokes about it are easy to understand.
It’s not a niche set, though it might sound like it.
A couple of days ago, I was talking to some fellow comedians. One of them had been in one of the open mics I’d participated in with a group of friends, and seen me do that set.
His table had howled with laughter. They, both men and women, had congratulated me when leaving the venue, telling me how much they’d liked my jokes. My lovely boyfriend listening to me talk about tampons had laughed his ass off.
It was a good night.
However, the other day the male comic in question had the need to explain the laughs I got.
